Although it took a little while to get here, spring has finally arrived! It brings with it the promise of more outdoor runs and rides, along with the first few big races of the season for me. In about a week I’ll be running the St. Louis half marathon where I’ll hopefully go even faster than I did in my first one a month ago.
I couldn't be happier with how my preparation is going heading into the next phase of the season. The biggest factor is that I've managed to stay injury free, even as I've increased both the amount of training, as well as the intensity. I am definitely already seeing the benefits of being able to train consistently, with another personal best at the Fighting Irish 5K of 18:44 a couple of weeks ago, where I got 8th overall and 1st in my age group.
That isn't to say that there haven't been a couple of small speed bumps along the way. I recently went on a 3-day trip for work and, while I was able to get some of my workouts in, a combination of other commitments and the local pool being closed managed to get in the way. Also, as part of our RPM bike class at Breakaway Bikes, we periodically do a 20-minute test to gauge where we are throughout our training cycles. Generally, you would expect to continue to improve on this test each time, and my recent work efforts certainly suggested I'd be able to again this time. Unfortunately, I only managed to get the same result as my previous test, which was a little frustrating given how well things had been going.
Thankfully it didn't take me too long to take a step back and realize that in the grand scheme of things, everything was going really well for me, which helped me to not dwell on the test result and missed workouts.
Big thanks are definitely due to Brian and Martin at Phila Massages for making sure that all of the knots and tightness that have been building up as I've ramped up the training haven't developed beyond that into injuries.
With the warmer weather rolling in, I'm looking forward to being outside more often, no longer constrained to staring at a wall while I'm on the treadmill or bike trainer. I'm also very excited for the up-coming half marathon and my first triathlon events for the year in May.
